Wolverine Peak Hike Recap: A Community Adventure in Anchorage
On Saturday, May 31st, 21 hikers gathered at the Basher Trailhead to conquer Wolverine Peak—a challenging 8.5-mile trek with a 3,605 ft elevation gain. The day was more than just a physical challenge; it was a celebration of community, growth, and the power of showing up.

For 10 of the hikers, this was their first-ever hike with TrailMates—and what a way to start! Despite the steep climb and rocky sections, everyone found their stride. Pete Devaris, our volunteer trail leader, captured the spirit of the day perfectly:
“Some had doubts, some dug way deep, but your perseverance, supported by the group’s sense of community, carried you to the summit.”
A Big Group, A Small-Group Feel
Pete shared that he was a bit nervous about leading such a large group, expecting it to feel overwhelming—like hiking with all of New York City! But the experience surprised him:
“I thought it would feel like I was hiking with all of New York City. But it wasn’t like that at all. I wouldn’t have noticed the difference if I was hiking with 30! Everybody broke out in little groups and we were scattered across the trail. I felt like I was hiking with 3 to 5 people all day long. Always a different 3 to 5, but damn… it really worked just fine.”
That’s the beauty of TrailMates—even when we’re a big group, we create a sense of intimacy and connection. Small conversations, shared snacks, and words of encouragement make every hike feel personal and welcoming.
A Weather Break and a Summit Party
The weather played its part too. Just as we reached the summit, the clouds parted and the sun peeked through—perfect timing for a summit champagne party to toast our accomplishment!
We’re so grateful to Pete for leading this adventure and to everyone who showed up, supported each other, and made this day special. Wolverine Peak is tough, but together, we made it to the top.
