Soaking Up Sunshine at Thunderbird Falls

Saturday, June 14th | Chugiak, Alaska

Distance: 1.8 miles (out & back) | Elevation Gain: 337 ft

On a bluebird Saturday afternoon, TrailMates gathered at the Thunderbird Falls Trailhead just off the Glenn Highway for a mellow, family-friendly adventure through the trees. With the sun shining and the parking lot bustling, it was clear we weren’t the only ones craving a dose of nature. Led by hike leader Sara Burda, the group followed a well-maintained trail that wound through birch and spruce forest, ultimately revealing the powerful beauty of the falls in full force.

This hike offered the perfect opportunity for new TrailMates to join in, for parents to bring their kiddos along, and for anyone to feel the ease of being outside without the pressure of steep climbs or intense mileage. At just under two miles, Thunderbird Falls delivered connection, beauty, and movement—without overexertion.

"Sometimes it's nice to have hikes that are low pressure but high reward, with amazing views for everyone to enjoy," said Sara, who thoughtfully ensured that even the most camera-shy hikers felt respected and included.

A Big Group, A Small-Group Feel

Even though the parking lot was packed and the trail was well-trafficked, the TrailMates group found their rhythm in the shade of the forest, moving together at a conversational pace. With Sara leading the way—and her littles tagging along—it was a reminder that hiking doesn't have to mean scaling summits or logging 10+ miles to be meaningful.

There was a mix of seasoned community members and brand-new faces. For many, this was their first TrailMates hike—and that’s what this event was designed for.

“These shorter hikes with less incline are a great way for people to get introduced to Alaska hiking and to TrailMates,” Sara explained.“It’s important to create space where everyone—especially parents with young kids—can feel welcome and capable.”

The trail is well-suited to all experience levels: wide enough for side-by-side walking and friendly for strollers all the way to the overlook platform. It’s also dog-friendly (on leash), so a few happy pups trotted alongside the group, adding to the light-hearted atmosphere.

Waterfall Vibes and Woodland Wonder

Upon reaching the falls, the group made their way down the side trail that leads to the base of Thunderbird Creek. The recent snowmelt made the waterfall surge with energy, misting the air and creating the kind of scenic reward that makes you pause and take a deep breath. The cool air near the rushing water offered a refreshing contrast to the sun-warmed trail above.

There was a spirit of gratitude in the air—for the weather, for the views, and for the company. Conversations flowed easily, with hikers sharing weekend plans, favorite local hikes, and parenting hacks for getting kids out the door and into the woods.

While there wasn’t a formal summit or group photo moment, the experience was no less impactful. Sometimes it’s the simple outings that create the deepest sense of connection.

Why Low-Pressure Hikes Matter

A group of people hike on a forest trail, surrounded by lush green trees. One person walks a dog. Bright sunlight filters through the leaves.

At TrailMates, we talk a lot about how the outdoors can transform us. And while there’s a thrill in summits and long trails, there’s equal importance in low-pressure hikes like Thunderbird Falls—ones that invite in the people who might otherwise stay home.

These hikes say:“You don’t have to be a ‘hiker’ to belong here.”“You can bring your kids and still enjoy the moment.”“You’re welcome, just as you are.”

That’s exactly what this day delivered: easy access to nature, connection without overwhelm, and a sense of belonging for all.
