Sunshine, Service Members, and a Serene Trail: South Fork Valley Recap

On Thursday, June 12, the TrailMates crew met up in Eagle River for a beloved group favorite: the South Fork Valley Trail. With perfect bluebird skies, a gentle trail underfoot, and a wonderful mix of returning faces and first-timers, this 4-mile out-and-back hike was a midweek gift to the soul.

Led by Kevin Lurie, who has guided this hike several times for TrailMates, the evening featured everything we could hope for—mild temps, wide valley views, and a chance to unwind in the company of kind, curious people.

We had a great turnout, including five active duty service members who joined after hiking the trail over the weekend and returning because they enjoyed it so much. Their presence added something special to the group—reminding us of the real impact that community and nature can have on someone far from home.

A Big Group, A Small-Group Feel

Though TrailMates continues to grow, the vibe on this hike felt deeply personal and welcoming. That’s something we strive to preserve in every outing: no matter the headcount, we want you to feel seen. Whether you're a seasoned trail runner or lacing up hiking boots for the first time, you’re part of the team here.

Community member Ronald Bates put it beautifully:

“What I admire most about TrailMates is the strong leadership by Megan and all the hiking leaders. They genuinely look out for every single person on the hikes, whether they are an experienced hiker or on their very first hike. I also love that so many of our active duty service members are joining the hikes... Welcoming these service members into TrailMates can help battle the isolation and show our deep appreciation for their service to our country.”

That spirit of care was easy to feel Thursday night. People swapped stories, encouraged each other on steeper spots, and stopped often to take in the scenery—not just for themselves, but to share it with those around them.

Easy Trail, Big Views

The South Fork Valley Trail is a 4-mile out-and-back route with just over 600 feet of elevation gain, making it perfect for an after-work hike or a beginner’s introduction to Alaska’s backcountry beauty. It starts out fairly level and quickly opens into wide views of the glacial-carved valley.

The group moved at a casual pace, and once we reached the wooden bridge marking our turnaround point, people gathered to take in the view and relax for a bit. We laughed, took photos, and soaked in the sound of the creek rushing below.

One of our TrailMates noted:

“It was a perfect bluebird day—couldn’t ask for better weather. This is one of my favorite trails to lead because it’s great for families, beginners, and anyone just looking to enjoy a calm evening outside.”

Why Getting Outside Together Matters

Spending time outside with others isn’t just a fun way to explore Alaska—it’s a powerful tool for wellness. Research shows that just 120 minutes per week in nature can significantly boost your physical and mental health. Add in the element of social connection, and the benefits multiply:

  • Lower stress levels

  • Better mood and focus

  • Improved sleep quality

  • Stronger sense of belonging

In a place like Alaska, where long winters and geographic spread can lead to isolation, this kind of connection can be life-changing. Especially for newcomers, transplants, and active duty military members stationed far from home, joining a welcoming outdoor group can offer more than fresh air—it can offer friendship, purpose, and hope.

We’re proud to say TrailMates continues to be that kind of space.

A Hike That Felt Like a Hug

There were dozens of special moments throughout the hike:

  • One new participant sharing it was their first-ever hike in Alaska

  • Another member offering snacks to someone who forgot theirs

  • A military service member mentioning how nice it was to just relax and chat with regular people after a long week

Even the post-hike parking lot scene was full of connection. People lingered, exchanged numbers, talked about upcoming hikes, and offered to carpool next time. It’s amazing how something as simple as walking together in the woods can lead to new friendships.
