A Sunday Adventure on the Portage Pass Trail
On a Sunday morning, our TrailMates community gathered at the Whittier tunnel for a special group hike on the Portage Pass Trail. With a 9:30 a.m. meetup time, the energy was buzzing as hikers arrived, checked gear, and shared introductions before heading into the tunnel to catch the 10:00 opening.
The Portage Pass Trail is a 5.7-mile trek with 2,719 feet of elevation gain—a challenging but rewarding route that rewards hikers with jaw-dropping views of Portage Glacier, surrounding peaks, and alpine terrain. Hike leader Adolph welcomed everyone with a smile, reminding the group that TrailMates is all about connection, community, and enjoying the outdoors together—no matter your pace or experience level.
With our crew ready to go, we set off, enjoying a crisp morning air and the promise of glacier views ahead.
A Big Group, A Small-Group Feel
One of the things that makes TrailMates hikes special is the way large groups can still feel intimate. Even with a diverse crew of hikers, the day felt welcoming, supportive, and personal. Some hikers came solo, while others brought friends or family, but by the time we started climbing, it already felt like one big team.
TrailMates is more than just hiking—it’s about building community through shared effort and shared joy. On this trail, laughter and conversation carried us up the climb, with plenty of encouragement along the way. The climb wasn’t easy, but each break to take in the views doubled as a chance to connect, chat, and encourage new friendships.

“It didn’t matter that I didn’t know anyone at the start—I felt part of the group within minutes. That’s what TrailMates does best.”
Summit Vibes and Celebration

When we reached the high points of the Portage Pass Trail, the reward was immediate. The sweeping glacier views made every step worth it, and the sense of accomplishment rippled through the group. Cameras came out, snacks were shared, and hikers took in the quiet majesty of Alaska’s backcountry.
There was a true “summit party” vibe—the kind TrailMates is known for. Some hikers stretched out on rocks to soak up the scenery, while others explored side views and snapped photos with new friends.
“This trail is one of my favorites because it combines challenge with incredible payoff. But what makes it even better is seeing people experience it together.”
Moments like these are reminders of why we hike as a community—the views are sweeter when shared.
The Importance of Connection and the Outdoors

At TrailMates, we believe the outdoors offers more than just fresh air. Hiking together supports both mental and physical health. Trails like Portage Pass give us space to push our limits, reduce stress, and create lasting memories with people who share the same love for Alaska’s wild places.
Whether it’s the steady rhythm of climbing, the conversations that happen naturally on the trail, or the shared awe of a glacier view—time outside restores balance and reminds us of what matters most.
Research continues to show that outdoor activity boosts mood, lowers anxiety, and strengthens social bonds. Every TrailMates event is a chance to experience those benefits firsthand.
