A Fresh Snowy Adventure on Mount Baldy

On a crisp, clear morning in early November, a small group of TrailMates set out to conquer Mount Baldy in Eagle River. With the first substantial snowfall of the season covering the trails and the sun shining down on us, it was a day that reminded us why we love hiking—and why we love sharing these experiences with our Alaska hiking community.

The hike itself offered just the right amount of challenge: a moderate trail of approximately 3 miles miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain. While the numbers might matter to some, it was the experience that stole the show. Our cozy group of hikers was small enough to feel intimate, but full of energy and laughter spent the day trekking through snow-dusted forests, stopping to take in the views, and sharing stories along the way.

For many, this was a first-time winter hike experience, and for others, it was the joy of connecting with nature and fellow hikers in a calm, supportive environment. The mix of sunshine, snow, and camaraderie made it a perfect introduction to Alaska’s winter trails.

Cozy Vibes on the Trail

One of the best parts about TrailMates hikes is that no matter the size of the group, it never feels overwhelming. On this hike, the group was intentionally small to foster connection, with no dogs this time—just people, gear, and the great outdoors.

Connection—both with nature and with others—is one of the key reasons TrailMates exists. Spending time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall well-being. When you pair that with the support of a welcoming community, it becomes more than just a hike—it becomes a mental reset.

“The pace was perfect,” . “We had time to chat, laugh, and really enjoy the trail without feeling rushed. It reminded me how important these small moments are for our mental health.”

The Trail Experience

The trail to Mount Baldy offered a variety of landscapes that kept the day interesting. Fresh snow blanketed the path, making each step a crisp, satisfying crunch. Sunlight filtered through the trees, creating a glittering winter wonderland that felt almost magical.

“One of my favorite moments was just pausing halfway up the trail,” shared TrailMate member Sarah. “We were surrounded by snow, the sun was shining, and everyone just stopped to soak it in. It was quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. Moments like that remind me why I hike.”

The day also highlighted the importance of pacing, preparation, and enjoying the journey rather than rushing to the summit. While the mountain provided a challenge, it also offered an opportunity to practice mindfulness and presence in nature.

Summit Vibes and Celebration

Reaching the summit of Mount Baldy was the perfect way to cap off the day. The views were expansive: snow-covered peaks stretching as far as the eye could see, forests blanketed in winter white, and the bright blue sky providing a stunning contrast.

While we didn’t focus on hitting numbers or racing to the top, the sense of accomplishment was palpable. Hikers celebrated quietly, taking in the scene and capturing photos to remember the day.

Standing at the summit, looking out over the mountains, everyone felt proud, peaceful, and connected. It’s not just about the physical achievement—it’s about the experience, the people, and the moment.

After soaking in the views, the group began the descent, still enjoying the camaraderie and stories shared along the way. The day ended on a high note, leaving everyone with a sense of accomplishment and warmth, despite the chilly weather.
