Celebrate the shortest day of the year with a sunset hike to the summit of The Butte! This iconic 2.3-mile out-and-back trail near Palmer is a local favorite—and there’s no better time to experience it than on the summer solstice.
With an elevation gain of 748 feet and an average completion time of 1 hour and 27 minutes, this moderately challenging trail is perfect for a late-night adventure. The route begins with a smooth gravel trail and climbs steadily through stairs, switchbacks, and scenic benches overlooking the Talkeetna Mountains. Near the top it opens up to panoramic views that stretch from the Cook Inlet to the Matanuska and Knik Rivers.
We’ll reach the summit just in time for the sunset—an unforgettable Alaskan moment you won’t want to miss.
