About the Hike
We're kicking off November with a big mountain day! 🥾❄️
Join TrailMates for a snowy adventure up to Rabbit Lake and along McHugh Ridge. This is a longer, more challenging hike with plenty of elevation, winter conditions, and some incredible mountain scenery along the way.
We'll start at the Rabbit Lake Trailhead and make our way approximately 4.5 miles to Rabbit Lake. For anyone who prefers a shorter adventure, the lake is a great turnaround point.
Those continuing on will climb toward McHugh Peak, following the ridge before dropping down just short of the peak to complete the loop.
The full route is approximately 12 miles with 3,500 feet of elevation gain, so come prepared for a full day in the mountains!
Trail Conditions & Difficulty
This is a challenging hike best suited for hikers comfortable with longer distances, significant elevation gain, and snowy mountain terrain.
Expect snow throughout the route, including wind-affected snow along the ridge. While the ridge isn't especially exposed, there are sections of boulders and loose rock that may require extra care with snow cover.
There are no planned stream crossings or bushwhacking sections. We'll assess conditions as we approach the ridge and adjust the route or turn around if necessary. Snow and mountain weather can change quickly, so safety will always take priority.
Recommended Gear
Microspikes or Kahtoola traction devices — highly recommended
Hiking poles — highly recommended
Gaiters — highly recommended
Headlamp — essential with shorter daylight hours
Warm layers and weather-appropriate clothing
Plenty of food, snacks, and water
Any additional winter hiking essentials appropriate for the conditions
Important Reminders
⏰ Don't forget the time change! Daylight Saving Time ends November 1. You'll gain an extra hour of sleep, but sunset will be earlier on the clock.
🥾 Know your limits. The full loop is a strenuous undertaking in snowy conditions. Turning around at Rabbit Lake is an option, but participants choosing that option should be prepared to navigate and return independently unless a separate return group is arranged.
❄️ Be prepared for changing conditions. The planned route may change depending on snow, wind, visibility, and trail safety. Snow-covered terrain can present slipping, navigation, and avalanche hazards; conditions must be assessed on the day.
