About the event
Join TrailMates for a stunning afternoon hike to Gold Cord Lake, just up the trail from the historic Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass! This 1.8-mile out-and-back trail is a family-friendly favorite, featuring an easy start, gentle switchbacks through a scenic boulder field, and a rewarding alpine lake at the top.
Trail Details:
Distance: 1.8 miles
Elevation Gain: 528 ft
Duration: ~1.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate (short with some elevation gain)
Route: Out & back
What to Expect: We’ll enjoy wide open views, pass by an old mining cabin, and keep our eyes peeled for marmots and birds. The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. At the lake, we’ll take time to relax, explore, and soak up the alpine scenery.
What to Bring: Comfortable hiking shoes, layers for variable weather, water, snacks, and bug spray. Leashed pups are welcome!
This hike follows our booth appearance at Families to Parks Day at Independence Mine State Historical Park (11am–2pm). Feel free to stop by earlier to say hello and pick up a TrailMates Connection Bingo card!
Support TrailMates: TrailMates hikes are always free to attend, but if you love what we’re building, consider donating. Your support helps us train and equip volunteer hike leaders and grow our community across Alaska. Every bit helps—thank you!
