Join us for a breathtaking hike to Portage Pass! This 4.5-mile out-and-back trail near Whittier offers incredible glacier views, lush greenery, and a bit of a leg burn to earn those vistas.


Trail Details:

  • 📍Trailhead: Portage Pass Trailhead (Whittier side)

  • 🥾 Distance: 4.5 miles

  • ⛰️ Elevation Gain: 1,463 ft

  • ⏱️ Duration: ~2 hrs 50 min

  • 🚦 Difficulty: Moderate

  • 🐶 Dogs allowed (may be off-leash in some areas)


Important Info:

  • You must make the 12:30 PM Whittier tunnel to arrive on time. The tunnel runs on a schedule and is $13 round trip per vehicle.

  • The trail begins with a steep uphill climb, and you'll encounter another steep section on the way back from the lake—bring your trekking poles if you have them!


Expect stunning views of Portage Glacier, cascading waterfalls, and towering peaks. Weather in this area changes fast, so dress in layers and bring a rain jacket just in case.
